How to change samples in Ableton without rewriting the pattern
Changing a sample without rewriting the beat is easier when the pattern is in MIDI and the sound lives in Simpler or a Drum Rack pad. The MIDI preserves the triggers and you compare different sound sources in Ableton.

step by step
- Save a copy of the session. Select the Simpler or the pad that contains the sound you want to change.
- Locate the Hot-Swap control and search for an alternative sample. Check that you are replacing the sound of the intended device.
- Load the candidate and play the same MIDI pattern. Adjusts the output level for comparison without the loudest sample automatically winning.
- Check start, duration, pitch and envelope. A different sample may need another trim even if the notes don't change.
Guided practice
Try three kicks in a four-punch pattern. Keep the same MIDI speed and evaluate how each relates to the bass. Write what changed: attack, tail or perceived weight.

The pattern is preserved, but the answer may change
Replacing a sample maintains the notes of the pattern, but does not guarantee the same feel. A blow with a slow attack may seem delayed compared to a drier one; a long queue can fill gaps that were previously free. Listen to the change as a new interpretation of the same rhythm.
Also compare the tuning, envelope, and volume of the instrument. Make a copy of the clip or track so you can return to the previous sound. If the substitution requires too much correction, save that alternative for another part of the track and keep the sample that already serves its purpose.
If it doesn't turn out as you expected
This method does not replace all the audio files in the Arrangement at once. It also does not guarantee that the breakpoints of one sample will be useful for the next. For bulk clip edits, use the dedicated multiple selection tutorial.

How to use Simpler to play a sample in Ableton
Simpler turns a sample into an Ableton instrument. MIDI notes control when it is triggered and, depending on the mode, its pitch and duration. It's a convenient way to play a sample without duplicating many audio clips.

How to edit multiple sample clips at once in Ableton
Editing multiple sample clips at once in Ableton can be used to apply shared settings. This is not the same as replacing your source files. Before changing a value, identify which clips are selected and what controls the selection offers.

How to import multiple samples to separate tracks in Ableton
When importing multiple samples into Ableton, first decide whether you want a sequence on a single track or simultaneous sounds on different tracks. That decision changes what you can edit and mix later.
